I Will Sing (Hymns & Songs)

(Over the years I've written - and continue to write - songs and retuned older hymns for church worship. I'm occasionally posting those songs here. If you're using them in a church worship setting, go for it, just please give credit and let me know.)

I wrote this song at a very dark time in my own life, wrestling with despair and discouragement after our family went through some very hard things and were facing an uncertain future. It came out of spending time in the Psalms of Lament, those (many) moments when the psalmist cries out, declaring trust in God even though it feels unthinkable.

I Will Sing
Words and Music: Eric Tonjes

Though I am frail and foes abound
Still I will sing, still I will sing
The host of darkness gather ‘round
Still I will sing, still I will sing
Although your face is hid from view
I know no one as good or true
My hope is naught if not for you
So I will sing, so I will sing

Though the accuser dogs my steps
Still I will sing, still I will sing
My sin he won’t let me forget
Still I will sing, still I will sing
But though my stain is black as night
I’ve passed beneath the crimson tides
And now your Bride is dressed in white
So I will sing, so I will sing

Bridge:
Though the thorns grow thick
And the shadows long
Still these bent notes blend
Into joyful song

Creation creaks beneath the fall
Still I will sing, still I will sing
The nations plot in Satan’s thrall
Still I will sing, still I will sing
For though the grave may yet hold sway
I rest upon the coming day
When all that’s old will pass away
So I will sing, so I will sing
